Slashdot - Growth, Rank, and Attention

While everyone is busy writing and thinking about Web 2.0, Ajax, Tag Clouds, Ruby and Ruby on Rails, landing pages with just an email field, etc., nobody is talking about Slashdot any more. However, check out what is happening to Slashdot, that old Web 1.0 site without Ajax and Tag Clouds, written in Perl:

Not new at all, and Digg is still playing catchup, which is precisely the point - while everyone's talking about Digg and other such sites, Slashdot is growing like a weed as well. However, this growth (of both Slashdot and Digg) might be to something else after all:

I find it hard to believe that Slashdot is growing. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe more people using the Alexa toolbar are jumping on Slashdot?
Alexa is IE only. Not many Slashdot geeks use IE. My guess is that it has to do with Alexa's changes that I referenced in my previous comment.
IMHO, there was a big problem at Alexa for a few days. Their new rules completely screw the ranks, even my own site was pushed to the top at 45117!
Just to add my 2 cents there are lots of plugins for alexa available for non ie browsers as well.
