Del.icio.us Kaput
« Ari Paparo on del.icio.us vs. Blink | Main | 2006 »
Uh, all this talk about del.icio.us is too much, but this is a note for those still migrating to Simpy from del.icio.us:
NOTE: Syncing with del.icio.us is currently kaput because del.icio.us is apparently down ("del.icio.us is down for maintenance. we'll be back in one hour."). Please sync later today or whenever del.icio.us comes back to life. The sync is here. Over and out.

Hi otis. There's something wrong with my account (phred). I cannot add any new bookmarks.. Probably that's because my sync is stuck and while syncing I cannot add new bookmarks..?
Seems that the Simpy homepage has been hacked. I keep getting a message that it is being updated and being turned into a Gremlin????
Any help on what is going on?
@dbalzer: As I recall it, the Gremlin is probably just Otis' cute notice for Simpy being down for maintenance. (Otis, please correct me if mistaken). In that case it's similar to other cute, euphemistic and/or funny images many new (web 2.0) sites employ. For example, the very popular Bloglines.com news aggregator shows an apologetic plumber (like these images [1], [2], [3]) when things go awry. Cute, eh 8)

Philipp: it looks like you are fine, I see you've bookmarked new stuff
dbalzer: Jarkko is right! Nobody hacked Simpy, I just took the little Gremlins for a short walk the other night.
Jarkko: thanks!
@Otis: No problem :) You could probably introduce your maskot(s) in the FAQ so that people won't be so frightened encountering one in the darkest of night *lol* Maybe you ought to also make miniature gremlins part of the info area or other parts of the site. Anyway, just a suggestion ... -Jarkko
Thanks, otis. I can bookmark again.
After the maintenacne everything was fine again.
About the mascot: The picture didn't show up because everything was forwarded to the "maintenance.html", also the image.. :-)
Jarkko: that's a good idea (FAQed Gremlins), I'll add that. But there are no Gremlin pictures, just a Simpy logo.... but maybe a Gremlinized Simpy logo would be cool.... eh, damn the 24 hour limitation!
Philipp: yes, I noticed the thing is broken, despite me playing with some RewriteCond things. I already tried fixing that, but it seems that it didn't work. No problem, though, the fix is easy (just got an idea for a simple and elegant fix). Thanks for the nudge.
Otis, just move to Mars -- after acclimatizing you get one hour extra in a day, although I'm sure you would spend it just as well ... oh wait, the domed settlements promised by NASA aren't ready yet -- bummer!
:)
otis, just start playing with simpy. don't you have a how-many-people-also-bookmark-this-page number for each bookmark?
speedo: I agree. This is one of the things that I'd really like to see implemented in Simpy. Not sure why it can't be done.
@speedo, @wujimon: There sure is a way to see the bookmark count for each link -- just click history from the list of commands (
similar - cached - mail it - history) following the URL on each link item. See for example the following for Digg.com, http://www.simpy.com/simpy/LinkHistory.do?href=http%3a%2f%2fdigg.com%2fI embedded the page for easy perusal below:
An error has occurred. This may be a temporary error.
you should attach a screenshot instead of a IFRAME ;)
@speedo: Yeah, I saw that error too 8) but as I had tested the link before embedding the IFRAME, I was rather confident that it would work at some point later (as it does now). And speaking of point, it really was my point to show the current situation, ie. the count of total entries, continuously growing live. And screenshots can be a hassle, too, if you don't have hosted home page or blog already (I don't). So there, now you know :)
@Otis: By the way, would you consider reversing the order of Link History, latest entries first, so that you could easily check your own addition right away? Also a reversed order would give more dynamic view of the situation, don't you think.

I switched to simpy from del.icio.us, and it seems to work great for my needs, except for the problem with the RSS feeds. The Title and Description in the RSS feeds only shows the title of the page from the link, not my edited display titles for my bookmarks. Are there any plans to correct this oversight? With most of my bookmarks having the wrong names, it's hard to justify sticking with simpy.
@jarkko: ok, i can read the history page now. but what i really want to see is the number be shown right after the bookmark on the links page. i mean all links page, mine, all, or any other people. you know del.icio.us has it, the "and 12345 other people" words.
Hey, the RSS is fixed! You guys rule. Thanks a lot!
Otto: yes, it's fixed. Also, "guys" is really "a guy". :)
speedo and wujimon: I am working on "N others". Hope to have it done soon.
Jarkko: I completely agree. I did try reversing the order, but had some issues with it. I don't recall the details, but I just added it to my todo list, so I'll give it another try soon. I'm actually thinking of merging Link Details page with Link History. What do you think?
Otis, feel free to merge Link Details and Link History, although my worry is that the page will become rather long and probably needs some DHTML for collapsing elements like the merged Link History itself. Furthermore, the following lesser-used fields should then also be de-emphasized in the gui: Last modified, Last indexed, Last visited, and Times clicked. Maybe they could be placed on the same line with the link add date (Added), I don't know. One could also ponder if tag editing ought to be available from the same view in an Ajaxy fashion. See for example how easy it is to edit the tags for articles or feeds in the news aggregator Rojo. Please take a look there, Otis. -Jarkko
Otis, I forgot to mention that I'm not fully satisfied with the Link History graph because the descriptive labels (month/year) below the horizontal axis frequently overlap when the number of the month is double digit. It's also hard to see where the previous label ends and the next one begins. I presume the font is too large for the label to fit under the columns of the graph. The graph is now a creation based on HTML, so maybe you should consider showing an image-based graph generated by RRDtool or something similar. I see you have bookmarked JRobin, a Java-based LGPL'd equivalent to RRDtool. The demo gallery looks nice. -Jarkko
PS. Incidently, there's a nice Christmas card in RRDtool's gallery here. :)
