Web 3.0 Style Spamvertising

« Simpy Widgets, Part 1 | Main | Social Software Ain't Social »
Back in December of 2005 I wrote about Referrer Spam (note those 351 comments!), which turned out to be an old spamming technique. What Simpy's log analyzers have been turning up a lot lately is another form of spamming through web logs. Instead of sticking the advertised URL in the referer field, spammers now also spam web site owners like this:

216.246.42.122 - - [03/Aug/2006:23:34:49 -0400] "GET /simpy/LinkAdd.do?href=http://www.chaespot.com/insurance&title=InsuranceDirectory HTTP/1.1" 400 297 "-" "WordPress/2.0.3"

This is simply an entry from a web log, representing a single request. It's okay when you see requests like this here and there, but it's "uncool" when you see thousands of these in your already huge logs.

Here at Simpy, spammers are zapped on a continuous basis. Zapping is fun, especially when done automatically.
