Is del.icio.us heading south? According to some stats, it is:

Quantcast shows the same...

Any obvious reasons why? Though the timing of the psuedo delicious 2.0 announcement is convenient...

Left by Otis Gospodnetic at Mon, 28 Jul 11:46 PM

Fred:
Not sure why the usage is going down. Some speculations:
* People think Y! is sinking and are junking ship
* Joshua S (del founder) left Y!/del.icio.us
* Del.icio.us is slow (people complain about slow search and such)
* It's summer, people are on vacation or out of school
* Got more?

I sure hope not. I love this site.

Thanks

Actually, when doing some of my own observations, I have found traffic of compete to not be correct. The new url of del.icio.us is now delicious.com, with changes in the site. On compete, it shows delicious.com traffic to be increasing, but decreasing on del.icio.us, which might be the problem. Alexa showed same statistics though.

Actually, the graphs above are from pre-mass-delicious.com switch, so they were correct at the time.

It seems it recovered:

Otis, I hope Simpy doesn't suffer the same fate. It seems the past month or two, response times have been tragically slow. Like ~1 year ago, I'm thinking of leaving because of it. When I try to search my links via the Fx add-on, results take a full minute or sometimes two full minutes.

I imagine it's an issue of processing power rather than bandwidth, if I were to guess. Are there plans to address this? I like the toolset here, but not the performance.

Left by R! at Mon, 18 Aug 10:08 PM

Performance today was very good, btw.

Left by Otis Gospodnetic at Wed, 20 Aug 11:14 PM

Good to know. It will get better, don't worry.

Comment not approved and no e-mail from you, Otis? So, how am I supposed to know what policy is on this site, if you're not willing to answer questions about it?

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 5:57 PM

Mr. Gospodnetic - This ties into a few questions I've been meaning to ask, and I think others might have wondered about.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 5:57 PM

1. In the FAQ, you write

" Q:How can I post my articles or blog posts on Simpy

A: In short, Simpy is not meant for posting articles. It is also not meant to be a blog promotion material. In other words, do not post your articles on Simpy and do not post each and every blog post you write to Simpy. This misuse of Simpy is seen as spamming."

As a user, I find that this has greatly reduced my usage of your service, out of concern that if I make my profile anything other than an absolute bare minimum effort, that will be viewed as "spamming" - which seems strange to me. The word "spam" has a long established meaning that doesn't fit in with what might seem to be the implication of that rule.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:00 PM

My Question: Let's say that I do as I was thinking of doing, find a collection of pages (probably philosophical essays written by others), and include some critical commentary about the arguments used on the pages to which I link. Would each of those blocks of commentary be considered to be an "article" and thus "spam", providing grounds for my banishment from this service? Or would they be seen as being legitimate content?

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:01 PM

What seems truly odd to me is that you'd chase off content that visitors to the site might actually want to sit down and read, calling it "spam", especially when there is so much submitted that really and truly is spam. Consider this screenshot of the simpy.com homepage, which I took about just a few minutes ago.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:05 PM

OK, you've got the system set to block me from submitting that url. Fine. I'll spell it out so that you're spam filter doesn't know it's there: i35 dot tinypic dot com slash14w63yh dot jpg

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:06 PM

One follows that "home improvement tax credits" link and comes to this: i36 dot tinypic dot com slash swtwef dot jpg, which, in common usage terms, really is spam. Wouldn't you like to see that signal to noise ratio shift in a way that's going to make visitors want to come back to your site for more? But the way I'm reading your policy leaves me thinking that if I try to do my part to make that happen, you'll toss me out the door for having done so.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:07 PM

Is that a correct understanding of what you meant to say?

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:07 PM

2. In the FAQ, you also write

Q: Are my Notes public or private?
A: Your Notes are private. Only you can see them.

but I noticed that I could see my own notes when I was logged out, and that they appeared on the feed for my profile. Has the policy changed?

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:09 PM

I can see notes on this profile simpy dot com slash user slash fundu slash links, which doesn't belong to me, suggesting that notes are publicly visible. Is that how fundu's profile is supposed to work, or is that a temporary malfunction that is about to be fixed. I'm hoping that you're going to say the former.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:10 PM

Again, if I'm here to share with those dropping by, writing notes that nobody will be seeing, other than myself, seems kind of pointless. If, on the other hand, the notes are meant to be public, and are going to be allowed to stay public, then that's one more reason to get more actively involved with Simpy.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:10 PM

Which, to get back to the subject of your post, is why I suspect Del.icio.us might be going downhill - there's just not much of anything to do once one gets there. I would wonder if Simpy might be in danger of following in its footsteps, through an accidental misunderstanding.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:14 PM

Like the one I just had a minute ago. Otis, please tone down the spam filter. Posting a reasonable not to one's sysop should not require a minor hack, but in this case, it did. Your filter ate the above comment, which clearly isn't spam, until I chopped it into pieces and submitted it piecemeal.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:17 PM

I was left with the impression that you were moderating comments, had refused to approve mine (your privilege), but had refused to answer the question I just asked about policy (the first question), which seemed kind of rude. So you are likely to be perceived, and not unreasonably so.

One usually assumes that the comment section on a blog will work without incident.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:23 PM

The comment I tried to submit earlier begins in the comment you see posted 557 PM

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:23 PM

I guess you must be on the east coast, because that would be 37 minutes in my future at this point. :) I'll be interested to see what your response will be.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Tue, 14 Oct 6:24 PM

But seriously, PLEASE get that spam filter fixed, because this was a real pain in the backside.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Thu, 16 Oct 9:34 AM

Oh, well, I guess that nobody is reading this.

Joseph:
Didn't see your comments until now.
Yes, the spam filter on this blog doesn't work very well - my own comments sometimes get rejected. It's a flaw in the blogging software this blog uses.

As for Notes, you are confusing the standalone Notes feature in Simpy, which are private, with short notes one can save with each bookmark (bookmarks can be either private or public).

I hope this answers all your questions.

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Thu, 13 Nov 3:17 PM

Otis,

We seem to have passed each other en route - having found your user group, I posted my query there, thinking that was a more suitable place than your blog for such things. The url I submitted with this comment will take on to the yahoogroup post I just sent.

Your last comment answers question 2, obviously - those short notes will remain publicly visible if the bookmarks are - but please refresh my memory. How does this answer question one, which was about what constituted spam in a simpy note?

Specifically, if I did what I described doing - writing critical comments about the arguments used in an essay I linked to - would that be considered spam under Simpy's definition?

Yes or no?

Left by Joseph Dunphy at Thu, 13 Nov 5:20 PM

BTW, Otis, I notice that my last post in the Simpy User group has been slow in arriving. Have you put me on moderation, or is Yahoo just unusually slow today?

Left by Otis Gospodnetic at Thu, 13 Nov 6:04 PM

Joseph:
You need to be less suspicious about yahoo's service and about Simpy's blocking and such. None of that is happening.

The FAQ about spam has nothing to do with Notes (the full ones or the ones that go with bookmarks), it's about "bookmarking" one's own content or links that point to one's articles, link farms, and so on.

Also please note that SImpy is my side project, so feedback is not instantaneous.

Finally, please keep the conversation here. Your messages on the list are being delivered with black background.

Google Chrome sounds mighty impressive. Have a look. What's even more interesting for me is just how quickly the first Chrome user hit Simpy. Here is the first Chrome hit from Simpy's log. This happened about 5 minutes after Google Chrome became available for download.
