Maintenance: More Memory!

To remedy this, more memory is about to be added to one of Simpy's servers. This means the service will be down for approximately 30 minutes, starting around 01:45 EST.

UPDATE: We'll have to go through this exercise once again in the coming days - the RAM that was to be added turned out not to work in this server.

Dirty Laundry

It looks like the technical difficulties I mentioned a few days ago are not fully resolved. For the technical readers, here is a picture that explains everything:

As you can see, this particular server has only 1 GB of RAM! My laptop has more RAM than this, and yours probably, too! You can also see that the poor server had to resort to using swap space, too, and is currently using 35 MB of it. Since swap is slow, everything hitting this server slows down and takes a long time to process. This is why the load is over 80 - that is how many processes are currently trying to run and use the CPU. Lovely, isn't it? Needless to say, I will be adding more RAM to this server as soon as possible.

Tumblr Spammed! Tumblr Dead?

Every site/service that's based on people joining and making it their home by collecting or publishing some kind of content in their new home is attractive to spammers and "self-promoters", as I like to call them. Here at Simpy I noticed and increasing number of Tumblr bookmarks over the past few weeks. Very often, these bookmarks and the people who have Tumblr bookmarks look like spam. Alexa, while not accurate, does show a crazy spike in recent weeks:

What does this tell you? It tells me that spammers have infected Tumblr. I see that Tumblr's Blog has been inactive for months, and people are wondering whether Tumblr is dead. Does anyone have any details?

Compete: TechCrunch and Mashable On Fire

One of my favourite free Web services, Compete has July stats out. If we can believe them, both TechCrunch and Mashable had some massive growth past month:

That feels a liiiittle suspicious. I am not sure what would cause such sudden growth of both of these now old and established blogs. In addition, neither Alexa nor Quantcast reflect this growth, really.

Ah, ha! The newly opened Spock got me as user274964c64k114162p09 (nice and memorable, I'm user274964c64k114162p09@spock!). My tags so far? "Computer software" and "Senior Search Engineer" - fairly generic, though not far from truth.

Update: Boy is Spock getting slammed by people and searches.
