Web 2.0 Disruption
« Announcement: Simpy is Profitable | Main | More AdSense For The Long Tail »
I am happy to say that, judging from the adoption rates, the reaction to Simpy's ad money give-away has been overwhelmingly positive.
The way I see this, it is one of the first 2006 Web2.0 Disruptions [1]. Why do I think this is a disruption? This is why:
Suddenly, with Simpy giving away advertising money, where 100% of the earned profit goes to people whose Simpy pages the ads are on, one can make some money just by being a good "bookmarker" and "tagger", by doing a good job of aggregating, marking up and organizing data of interest to others. While no single individual will get rich doing just this, think of it in aggregate terms!
All of a sudden, each and every one of the 300,000+ del.icio.us users [2] (or anyone else out there) can start making a bit of extra money, without even having to own a web site, a home page, or a blog, and without doing any extra work. Instead of thinking of their bookmarks as a $100 value that del.icio.us and its VCs made from them, these same people can now actually make some money from the work they've put into searching, finding, saving, and tagging links!
Think for a second about those 300,000 people. Imagine that each of them makes use of Simpy's give-away. Imagine just a single month passing. Even if each of them earns only $3/month, together they would generate nearly $1,000,000/month!
Although Simpy would not see any of that money, I am excited that I can provide a framework, a mechanism that makes this possible. As I always say, I try to mimic nature/life with Simpy. By providing this service, I am trying to provide an open market that individual Simpy users can make use of.
[1] Incidentally, John Battelle thinks this is a year of Disruption for the Web, and is looking for a suitable Web 2.0 Conference tagline.
[2] Note that this is not a move to get del.icio.us users! I am simply using that service as an example, because its numbers are more or less known, and because they have it extra easy: they already have a large collection of tagged links that may be interesting to others, and they can move it to Simpy with 1 click, but without having to move to Simpy and abandon del.icio.us.

Comments on this entry:
For God's sake, even if that was the purpose, you shouldn't have to apologize for providing a service that might benefit your site at the expense of your competitors. That is the beauty of the free market -- consumers are better off.
A: I know I shouldn't have to apologize, and I'm not really apologizing - there is nothing to apologize for. I am merely trying to explain the ideas an intentions as well as I can, and avoid criticism caused by misunderstandings.
The idea isn't disruptive as the way that disruptive was meant to mean.
That said it is seriously a great idea and I'm sure many user will applaud you. You "get it" might be the simpy-est word use.
Putting on the business hat though, I'm thinking how are you going to pay for the bills?
To me Squidoo has a good model in terms of balancing the community that support it and paying the bills.
BTW, I signed up for a number of bookmarking services and I find Simpy the smoothest. This Adsense idea is a real thick icing on the cake!
59, I guess the very question about how to make money shows how disruptive the thing is. :-)
59 ideas: Thank you for your kind words. I will take a better look at Squidoo's approach. As for paying bills, they are currently pretty minimal, plus I'm not doing this for money (Simpy is a side project), as I tried explaining in comments here and here.
Btw. your "bookmarking services" link gives 404.
Oh, and as for "disruptive" - perhaps I am using it wrong. Got a pointer where I can see what you are referring to?
Tiago: Actually, this does make Simpy a little bit of change, but the whole idea is to experiment and learn, and not to make money. Money here is just a nice side-effect.

The only problem with adsense is google learns everything about you and your visitors to do as they wish.
Anyone interested in doing a better contextual marketing system that isn't so "black box" that offers privacy and is affordable yet profitible for those that implement the service?
Byron: isn't that true about any online ad network? What ideas have you got, I'm curious!
Joy is the project that is not done for money! I admire your position.
We could content very much whether the idea "disrupts".
Without get too much into the "disruptive" sematics, this was what I had in mind

BTW, fixed the 404. Thanks!
I've sent you an outage problem report to feedback ät simpy.com. There's a problem with Simpy's database server based on tracebacks its presenting. Hope you find the problem soon. This is just a reminder because I've found out that you don't always remember to respond on my emails to said feedback address :) . Cheers anyway,
