Simpy Hits 2 Million Members
« Ahead of Google, del.icio.us, etc. | Main | Maintenance Tonight at 00:30 EDT »
I have a couple of great Simpy announcements to share on this lovely Sunday. I cannot hold it back any longer, so let me just get it out of my system:
- Early next week Simpy will welcome its 2 millionth member.
- The number of bookmarks stored in Simpy is growing rapidly and will cross the 250 million (yeah, quarter of a billion!) mark sometime around the middle of next week.
This is a great milestone for Simpy, especially since Simpy is only my side project. Simpy is not a full-time business with a large team and venture capitalist funding. I am extremely proud and happy to share these numbers publicly. Some have advised me to keep this a secret as long as possible, keep the low profile, but it is very had keeping this locked inside, even if it makes business sense. I hope these numbers will encourage all the dreamy entrepreneurs out there - it is possible to run a Web 2.0 service cheaply and still make it huge without taking outside funding. I will write an essay about what it takes to accomplish this and publish it on this blog.
To all the Simpy members out there - thank you, thank you, thank you!

Congratulations Otis, it is quite an accomplishment!
Congratulations. This is about double as many users as delicious has. Great accomplishment, and an inspiration.
Can you comment on weather a web site as big as yours produce enough income to replace a full time job? Because it seems that it doesn't!!! Otherwise, why continue to work fulltime for someone else?!!! Your insight is greatly appreciated.
Del.icio.us now has about 3 million + signups.
Congratulations. Simpy is a great service. The response times are amazing. The only suggestion I have is to implement a "popular" feature to see what the "hot" sites are.
What kind of hardware do you have? I know that del.icio.us has over 100 servers. I'm sure you're getting along with a much smaller infrastructure. Anything you can share?
Dave Sullivan:
It might, depending on where you live. As for working for somebody else - that is a big opportunity as well, plus it is interesting and fun work.
Brian:
Where did you get that number? Last I heard it was 1 (without any mention of what percentage of that are spammers). What does "+ signups" mean?
Bob:
But what's "hot" for you won't be "hot" for me, and vice versa.
Dave:
Hardware....yes, certainly a lot smaller and perhaps more efficient than del.icio.us. I'll share more in the future. Where did you get that del.icio.us has over 100 servers?
Congratulations Otis ... that's a really BIG number that certainly made me say "wow".
@Otis:
It was on TechCrunch back in August.
Quote: "They also mentioned that they’ve grown from twenty servers at the time of the aquisition to over 100 today".

It's really great to know that a one-person side-project could grow that big. Best of luck to you.
Dave:
Ah, somehow I missed or forgot that number.
Benjamin:
Well....
Hey.... It just occured to me. This is an April's fools joke!!! Ahhh, I can't believe I fell for it. My only consilation is that everyone else did as well. Good one.
And the winner iiiiisssss...... Daaaaaaaveeeeee!
He, he, this was fun!
But this is not that far from reality, so don't feel bad.
Who's that number?
Which number? 2 million? See the comments, especially Dave's comment from April 3rd.
